5 Ways to Have a Great Time at the Beach when You’re in San Luis Obispo

July 8, 2021

San Luis Obispo treats beach lovers to more than 80 miles of natural coastal beauty, allowing for plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach when you’re visiting here. SLO-area beaches are also appealing because they cater to people of all ages and interests. If you’re looking for some beach-related suggestions for an upcoming visit, keep reading to discover five ways to enjoy the beach during your time in San Luis Obispo.

1. Play Sand Volleyball

You don’t have to be a member of the Pismo Beach Volleyball Club to partake in this particular activity at Pismo Beach or any of the other beaches in the area. If you prefer a more casual form of volleyball, simply make your way to Pismo Beach to use one of the sand volleyball courts there.

2. Catch a Wave or Go for a Swim

Strap your board to your car if you’re driving to SLO, or rent a surfboard locally to enjoy surfing in the waters here. The Rock in Morro Bay is a popular local surfing spot in the San Luis Obispo area. Cayucos Pier is an area to consider as well if you’re a beginner or intermediate-level surfer. For swimming, Pismo Beach is a top spot for swimmers of all skill levels. You’re also welcome to grab your suit and enjoy swimming at many other beaches in the area. After a day of fun in the sun and surf, you’ll be ready to return to your hotel near San Luis Obispo ready for some rest and relaxation by the pool or spa.

3. Stand Up on a Paddleboard

Heading to the beach in the SLO area can lead to some invigorating fun in the nearby waters. If you use a stand-up paddleboard, what’s also referred to as kiteboarding can be a bit safer, since it can be done in lighter winds while you’re on the water. As you enjoy the spray of the surf on your face, you’ll also be able to check out the marine life often found here.

4. Kayak & Explore Dinosaur Caves

Take a short trip from the city of San Luis Obispo to nearby Shell Beach, and you’ll be rewarded with a beachside treat. All you’ll need to do is rent a kayak and launch it from Shell Beach. There are other possible launch points in the area, but by kayaking here, you’ll be able to explore a series of arches, rock gardens, and caves known as Dinosaur Caves. Pay a visit to San Luis Obispo Bay and Avila Beach, and you can even kayak to a secret beach, where you’ll find the historic Point San Luis Lighthouse.

5. Soak Up the Sun

You’re also welcome to slip into total relaxation mode when enjoying the beaches in the San Luis Obispo area. Just grab a beach towel, apply some sunscreen, and soak up the sun after finding your perfect spot on the beach. And since San Luis Obispo gets an average of 290 days of sunshine per year, you’ll have many opportunities to bask in the sun’s rays on an SLO-area beach.
